Review

This is a great book for any consumer of healthcare as well for any person working in the healthcare industry. I enjoyed reading the history of health insurance in the US and the narrative as to how the industry developed (sad!) and sets the stage for the ACA reform. I also agree with her perspective regarding the lack of transparency in the industry. Most importantly, it has given me a new perspective regarding what my role is (or should be) as broker-as advocate, not as a salesperson. With health reform coming, I am rethinking my business strategy to get in front of the change rather than behind it. Needless to say, this book came at the right time. Very helpful. I am absolutely satisfied with my purchase, and highly recommend it! --Wayne S., Insurance Broker

First, I manage the insurance needs of a law firm. So, each year we get new numbers back from our brokers for continuing our health and dental insurance programs with our current carrier. Then we get competing quotes, which, after underwriting, are even worse. So we then negotiate the best we can and then report back to the employees why the costs of their coverage has gone up. There is always some blowback, and, honestly, I don't know how to advise employees what to do to make their premiums go furthest for them. We refer them to the broker, but we would like to do more. So, we have decided to find an informative guide for people to know what insurance they want to purchase. We have several options available, and this will allow our employees to make wise decisions affecting their own insurance coverage. "Don't Buy THAT Health Insurance: Become an Educated Health Care Consumer" is the answer for us. We bought several copies and have them available for people to read when they want to explore their options when buying new insurance. The employees feel better, we are serving them better, and so we are very happy to have found "Don't Buy THAT Health Insurance: Become an Educated Health Care Consumer", as the book fills the knowledge gap we have had for some time. --NWW, attorney

This is a EXCELLENT book - especially if you are shopping for Health Insurance or are self employed! This book provides necessary information to prevent you from making choices based on fear, and make informed, educated choices based on your situation. My choices were validated when my entire medical cost for the year was $930.00, instead of $9,000! Just knowing the cost of an office visit: my Doctor (an MD) charges only $55! %50 of what she charges when she has to submit an insurance claim! You read the nutritional information on the food you buy, the book helps do the same for the insurance you buy. This book empowers you to make the right choices for you. --Jenny R., individual consumer

Ms. Woodfield received her bachelor s degree from Pine Manor College in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts. She went on to receive her MBA from Penn State University, with a focus on marketing. She spent the next fifteen years, through the Clinton administration, working for major US pharmaceutical companies and learning how the pharmaceutical industry worked with, though, and for its end consumers, the everyday patient. During those years, she was exposed to the explosive growth of the HMO industry and moved from a primary care environment into an oncology- and research-based focus. As marketing regulations tightened, drug formularies were born, and patients began paying for medical goods and services they had never paid out of pocket for in the past. She worked with various entities to help patients gain access to vital medical therapies. She took her career in a new direction after the death of her children s father. After experiencing a great loss, knowing the feeling of uselessness and helplessness where nothing can be done to change the course of events, she took all her new knowledge and power and set out on a quest to help the average person understand the health insurance plan options from which they are being asked to choose. One group at a time, Katherine Woodfield has reduced premiums, empowered employees with understanding, and expanded coverage to people who had never coverage before
